Last week your (g)child got to Skype with a group of third graders from a Washington DC public elementary school (AGAIN). Last Friday, we first worked with our sixth grade buddies to design (blueprint) plans for an effective Leperchaun Trap. Next, we SKYPED with our friends in DC and read How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton. We shared some of our design ideas and created prototypes. After, we shared and the DC kids shared their traps. A great experience before St. Patrick’s Day. We will have to check back soon with the kiddos in DC to see if they caught any leperchans. We didn’t and we’re going to modify designs for next year!
As we delve into Ecosystems, the kiddos are learning about traits of each biome including, plant and animal life. The biomes we are focusing on are: wetland, desert, forest, grassland, tundra, ocean, and chaparral. The animal groups are: mammals (which we started with today), birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and insects.
Have a terrific week!

Last week your (g)child got to Skype with a group of third graders from a Washington DC public elementary school. They had a book discussion on the Newbery, Caldecott, and Coretta Scott King Winner, Last Stop on Market Street written by Matt de la Pena and illustrated by Christian Robinson. The young readers prepared questions and talking points including what they thought the author’s message was and the descriptive style in which the story was written. They learned a lot and had fun interacting with kids across the United States with similar ideas as them. We plan on working with the DC third graders again! Thank you to Mrs. Foote for hosting :-) and to Mr. Warren for making the DC connection!
Some questions, observations, and lessons learned made by your (g)child:
I liked the metaphor, The air smelled like freedom because that’s how CJ felt.
CJ’s Nana wanted him to see that there is always beauty even in the dirt.
I think the author wanted CJ and the readers to know that helping is good for everyone.
I still wonder where CJ lives.
Riding on the bus with the blind man, the butterfly lady, and the guitar man is better than having a car. CJ is lucky.
LAST STOP ON MARKET STREET written by Matt de la Pena and illustrations by Christian Robinson.
Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty—and fun—in their routine and the world around them. This energetic ride through a bustling city highlights the wonderful perspective only grandparent and grandchild can share, and comes to life through Matt de la Pena’s vibrant text and Christian Robinson’s radiant illustrations.

Hi Families,
I hope you had a beautiful weekend!
We are starting our unit on ecosystems, beginning with Arctic this week (so cool)! We will start a new non-fiction chapter book, Polar Bears and the Arctic by Mary Pope Osborne, part of a Magic Treehouse Fast Track book.
In writing, we will learn the difference between facts and opinions as well as learn how to effectively research and apply reasons/explanation to persuade a particular point-of-view. Over the next few weeks, the kiddos will be completing a five-paragraph essay. Kiddos are also incorporating figurative language traits (simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and hyperbole) into their narrative writing pieces.
Have a wonderful Week!

Hi Families,
I’m sure you’ll agree that your (g)child had a fantastic performance! The Weather Show made a big splash! I’m so proud of everything each kiddo learned about weather and how well they came together to put on this production for you!
Last Friday we had our monthly bake sale for our Service Learning Project to raise money for the HANA Fund (Help A Needy Animal) and each student was committed to the process and will find out how much money they raised tomorrow (they’ll keep you posted). Monday Message
1-22-18
Happy Monday Families,
We start our Monday Message with a message from Principal Cameron:
Greetings OPE Parents!
Please help make Olivenhain Pioneer Elementary (OPE) a Winner!
OPE is in the running to be considered one of the most innovative schools and we need your support to win! There’s $60,000 on the line, so keep reading to learn how you can support our school.
Earlier this year, we entered the Follett Challenge, a program created by Follett to find and reward schools for their work applying technology, content and creativity in ways that engage students, foster literacies and promote critical thinking. As part of the competition, we created a short video about what makes our STREAM program unique.
Please support us by viewing our video and voting for our submission at www.follettchallenge.com at the following link: OPE Library Movie
(or you can use the direct URL https://www.follettchallenge.com/video.cfm?id=1088 )
Twenty percent of our total score is based on how well we spread the word about our video and earn votes! You can cast one vote per day January 22 – 26, 2018, so be sure to visit often!
By casting your vote, you’ll help us to spread the word about all the exciting activities going on in our school.
Thank you for your support. Your vote could make the difference in helping our school be crowned the Follett Challenge champion!
Best,
Beth A. Cameron

Monday Message
January 8, 2018
Dear Families,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope you had a fantastic winter break with your family!
Weather Show is coming….Friday, February 9th. Time to be announced in the near future! Auditions for individual parts will take place at lunch this Thursday. If any student still has a weather script at home, please have him/her return to school. Thanks.
No School next Monday, January 15, 2018 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
Art Volunteer Information for 2018: If you’re interested in volunteering for art in the new year, please contact our teacher Letania Ingold via email at: [email protected]
Art Schedule for Langevin, 2018:

Friday, 3-2 11:40-12:40
Friday, 4-20 11:40-12:40
Friday, 5-18 11:40-12:40
Friday, 6-15 11:40-12:40
We are continuing to integrate learning about weather with science, research, writing, math, music, engineering/design, social studies, and language arts. Learners are researching weather related questions from environmental effects, structure impacts, causes, and various kinds of weather. We are monitoring changes in weather and recording data on bar graphs to observe, study, and evaluate changes we observe. Your (g) is also beginning to practice the songs about weather to demonstrate learning a different way as well as to prepare for their big performance for you. They are so excited!
This week to strengthen writing, kiddos are acting as detectives identifying important parts of paragraphs in other people’s writing (topic sentences, star ideas, details, and conclusion sentences) so that they can apply to their own writing. As they continue to research, they will also grow as they site their sources of interesting facts they learn about the weather. In reading, students are making inferences and providing examples of evidence that support their ideas.
In STREAM, kiddos are building bridges and will later test the structures with simulated natural disasters such as a hurricane or earthquake. They will be able to conclude if the structure they built was adequate for natural disaster that struck. If so, identify what made it withstand the force and if not, decide the weak points, reflect, and modify structure to increase durability. Ultimately, this experience should help learners to make real-life connections to weather and some of the natural weather occurrences so that they can be engaged and informed to make new designs.
I hope you have a fantastic week!
Respectfully,
Amy

Dear Families,
Last Friday, your child participated in The HANA Fund by either making an school announcement over the intercom, designing posters, helping bake goodies, advertise, work as docents, cahiers, product handlers, and setting-up/cleaning-up sales station. Everyone worked really hard and the kiddos raised $123.60 for The HANA Fund! YAY! PLEASE DON’T TELL, THEY WILL COUNT TOMORROW! THX.
Today during library, students were completely enthralled by pop-up author, Robert Sabuda. Pop-ups today have evolved with the times, using laser cuts to create intricate designs to help to a story (this is not the pop-up of your past). Here is the website for your child to learn how to make-up a pop-up Christmas Tree:http://wp.robertsabuda.com/pop-make-christmas-tree/
See attached link for additional Robert Sabuda ‘How-to’ videos and main website page.

This Thursday we will have our winter party and your (g) child may dress in pajamas. Also, our class has 24 students all together. Some treats are generously being sent for birthday celebrations and winter holiday fun with only 21 or 22 treats. Please include all our LOLs. Thanks for your consideration!
The kiddos are excited about their learning!
New Links have been added under the heading STREAM that include websites to each of our enrichment teachers.
I hope you have a fantastic week!
Respectfully,
Amy

Dear Families,
This week our class will kick-off a Service Learning Project with a bake sale this Friday, December 15, 2017 for The HANA Fund (Help a Needy Animal). The HANA Fund is a nonprofit organization that provides medical treatment to animals in need. Local veterinarians and staff from Coastal Animal Hospital in Leucadia started The HANA Fund and accept donations throughout the year. In addition to working with Coastal Animal Hospital to raise money, your (g)child will also get to experience first-hand how their contributions help HANA by learning from a veterinarian when he comes in for a class visit with his pet dog, Waffles. As a culminating activity, your (g)child will get to participate in a field trip to Coastal Animal Hospital at the end of the year. At that time, the third graders will share their Service Learning Project experience and offer funds raised throughout the year. Finally, the veterinarians will give everyone a tour of the animal hospital and learn about different medical treatments and procedures used to help animals. Each month, your (g)child will have an opportunity to participate in raising money for The HANA Fund by participating in a bake sale by being a merchant, cashier, sales representative, and docent for the organization.

Hi Families,
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weekend.
Math class will be in homeroom both today and tomorrow (no homework). We will resume switching for math classes next Monday.
We worked on a Thanksgiving dinner themed set of multiple step word problems with a dozen live turkeys as the guests of honor. The kiddos are demonstrating a lot of addition and multiplication strategies and discussing problem solving techniques that include (skip counting, multiplication equations, groups/counters, array, repeated adding, and number-line). The kiddos also problem solved when a character who was on a budget didn’t have enough money to purchase all the items for the dinner; terrific ideas in problem solving.
Safe travels on this holiday weekend!
Gobble, Gobble.

Hi Families,
I hope you had wonderful family time over fall break! I know I did and I'm happy to be back to school with each of your (g) children. :-)
Before I share what your (g)child will be learning until we break again in late November, I just wanted to let you know how proud I am of the effort your (g)child put forth during conferences. Each (g)child reflected upon individual strengths, goals, planned how to attain those goals, and presented an academic piece that reflected his/her learning. I was also impressed by the seriousness in which your (g)child took on this task as he/she edited, revised, and diligently rehearsed each presentation. As a teacher, it's an honor to be in the room during these moments when the glimmer in (g)parent's eyes reveal the awe, love, and pride they feel as they become witness to their (g)child taking ownership of their learning with enthusiasm and confidence. I feel very fortunate to be a teacher to your (g)child and appreciate your continued support.
Okay, back to the facts. In the next few weeks, we will be integrating learning in language arts, math, science, and social studies in the area of weather and natural disasters. Your child will take a deeper look into patterns, climate, and the impact weather and natural disasters can have on a region and its community. I will introduce National Geographic learning materials as well as supplemental tools to enhance your (g)child's learning experience.
Today, we began a learner centered approach to inquiry as we delved into QFT, Question Formulation Technique that we will continue over the next weeks. QFT provides students a platform to create questions that pique 'their' interests about weather; to seek what they want to learn and research. Everyone seemed very excited today, hopefully they'll share a bit with you.
Before Thanksgiving break, we will also be introducing our Service Learning Project in connection with the HANA Fund, Help A Needy Animal. More to come on that in the next few days.
If you're wondering if now is a good time to pick-up multiplication flash cards...it is! Five to Ten minutes a day will help with automaticity of facts and bridge a strong foundation for multiple step word problems. Also terrific to take on car, plane, train, ship, and camel rides (haha).
Have a terrific week and thank you for all you do!
-Amy

Hi Families,
I hope you had a fantastic weekend!
*Just a quick clarification about Spelling Word Levels and Homework. Each week, I’ll send home words for both Levels (1 and 2). If a student’s pretest place student at Level 1, I would like learner to take Level 1 but may also take Level 2. Some students want to practice both levels and also try for Level 2 and I’m supportive of choice as long as student feels confident and you are also supportive. Next, Spelling homework will typically be done via Spelling City (assigned on Monday and due on Friday). If Spelling City is on the Fritz, learner may write words in a sentence one evening and define words on another evening. Lastly, if technological equipment is not functioning properly, it’s alright. These things happen on occasion and I don’t want your child or you stressing about it; we can work it out the following morning. If you’re spending more time to get equipment to work than the time the lesson would have taken, put it down and we’ll reset the following day. : )
Announcements-
OPE Reads has started! Please log all minutes your (g) child reads on the OPE Read forms and turn in each week to our class!
Kiddos are working on their academic and citizenship goals to share with you at conferences next week!
Also, a class photographer and Junior Achievement Lead.
If you’re interested in one or more of the positions, please email me. Thank you!
